In Macao Roads a barbarous murder had recently taken place of an American ship’s company, by some Chinese. She was laden with opium and treasure, and while one of the desperadoes amused the commander with the delivery to him of a letter, the seamen were surprised, and most of them murdered, the intention of the assailants being the plunder of the ship ; several were literally and wantonly cut into small pieces, & but for the escape of the second mate, providentially effected through the cabin window,the plunder would have been completed, without probable discovery ; four of the villains were afterwards apprehended & beheaded .
